It's official: Strip Joints are Anti-Equality not a 'Moral Issue' thanks to a landmark case against Sheffield City Council and their licensing of notorious strip chain, Spearmint Rhino.
The Council was due to face Judicial Review in Court over its chronic lack of consideration of its Public Sector Equality Duties. These Equality Duties mean by law that all public bodies (like Local Councils or the Police) must fully consider equality and must 'promote good relations' between women and men in all their decisions and processes.
The Council conceded just before it was due to appear in Court that it had failed in this duty by granting Spearmint Rhino a license, despite countless objections on the harm of the venue (and indeed all strip joints) on equality which were deemed 'moralistic' by Councillors.
A HUGE congratulations to the brave claimant who took on the Council and Zero Option, the campaigning group who supported the claimant and whose hard work was pivotal to this success. (And of course, the human rights lawyers who took the case on!)
This case can be used by campaigners UK-wide to challenge their councils' decision to hand out strip club licenses, sometimes like 'blank cheques'
Talking of strip joints .. We are looking for someone to carry out basic internet research into London strip clubs - building up a map of what clubs are licensed where and what different London Authority policies are.
We can offer in the region of £100-150.
Contact us here with your CV and a professional referee we can email.
Back in Feb we asked you to respond to the London Mayor's Policing policy raising concerns around lap dancing (and prostituion).
Over a dozen people emailed him.
Thank you. Every email helps!
